Alot to do and see in Cullman, Alabama.

Cullman is an exciting little city to visit when on a tour of Cullman County. The city is open to locals and those visitors. There are usually events to take part in as well as many historic sites to be visited. However you choose to spend your time in Cullman, there is something interesting for everyone.

Ave maria grotto

The Ave Maria Grotto is an interesting attraction to say the least.  It is home to 125 miniatures of other famous structures from around the world.  Since 1934, people have been coming from all around the world to see this interesting site.  It was created by a bavarian benedictine monk named Joseph Zoetl.   Brother Joseph created all but 6 of his magnificent structures from photos and images.  It spans close to 4 acres and is located on the grounds of St. Bernard’s Abbey.  I would definitely not miss a chance to see this attraction if you are in the nearby area.

Sportsman Lake Park

When you visit Cullman, one of the funnest places to go with the family is Sportsman Lake Park.  This park is home to almost 5 miles of hiking trails.  It also has ameities for camping and swimming.  In case you don’t really like the water, there are plenty of other things you can do.  That is because the park also has Putt-Putt golf, a playground, hiking trails, picnic areas, pavilions, paddle boats, a train and a Ferris wheel.  Basically this is a place to go for outdoor fun for the whole family.

Clarkson Covered Bridge

This has positively got to be one of the best spots to visit in Cullman, hands down.   The Clarkson Covered Bridge was built in 1904 over Crooked Creek.  It was built on the property of a mail carrier for the price of $1500.

Originally, It was called the Legg Covered Bridge because that was the name of the mail carrier who owned the property.   Legg saw the need for improved roadways in the area and as such, donated most of the materials to build the bridge.

In 1921 the bridge was almost completely destroyed by floods. The majority of the pieces were found downstream, and the following year, the bridge was rebuilt. Rebuilding the bridge cost another $1500.  The bridge was in service until 1962. After that, a nearby concrete bridge rendered it obsolete.

In 1975, the bridge was restored as part of the bicentennial project. at the same time, a grist mill and a log cabin were also restored.  Today, the bridge is a popular attraction for tourists and is also a popular wedding venue.
