Cullman, Alabama, is the largest city in the county of Cullman. Cullman, the city, is also the county seat. It has the distinction of being the only place that shares a county name and city name. Cullman’s population is approximately 15,000. This city was founded in 1873, and it was incorporated in 1876. Cullman is known for its rich german heritage and roots. This is a city that is widely dependant on agriculture and is the top agricultural producer in Alabama, with poultry being the most important. Cullman was founded by Johann Gottfried Cullmann, a Colonel in the confederate army. Industry is also a major source of revenue for Cullman,and includes the manufacture of textiles, air compressors, metal products, and automotive parts. Cullman is home to several important landmarks, including the famous shrine, the Ave Maria Grotto, Lewis Smith Lake, and the Clarkson Covered Bridge.

As we look at the history of Cullman, Alabama, we see that the founder of Cullman came to the United States in 1866. He came to Alabama with the dream of having a place for German immigrants to settle. He purchased 349,000 acres of land in what at the time was Blount County from Louis and Nash Railroad. During the early years of the Cullman settlement, Johann Cullmann served as doctor, preacher, judge and real estate dealer. The small settlement quickly expanded and in four years, the state passed a bill creating a new county around the town, Cullman County, albeit with only one “n”. Cullman’s German roots are still very prevalent in the city with many residents still being German speaking people.
A freak incident of weather occured in April of 2011, a storm that spawned a large amount of tornadoes that destroyed much of the town. However, the every resilient towns people rebuilt the town and life goes on in this beautiful place.
